Blas de Lezo is commander of Cartagena in Colombia. Earlier he has lost an arm and a leg in the navy. And the stomping of his wooden leg can be heard in the narrow streets of the coastal city. Then the English decide to send the greatest invasion fleet ever across the sea to take the main port of Spanish America. Under siege for months Blas de Lezo fights off the superior invasion force. The English hushes the embarrassment down as if the siege never happened. On his death bed Blas de Lezo is delirious. He keeps repeating: "fuego." Open fire. I don't know if this book has been translated to English. If not, it should be. It's an amazing true story.

Great read. Finally a book that makes the English and not the Spanish look like arrogant fools. For those readers that are sick and tired of Hollywood stuffing American and English propaganda down your throats.
A little known history retold with power and passion.
As usual. Spanish historians (as well as the British ones) always have a bias towards their achievements and miss objectivity. Good reading.
This is a great book about a very little known, but critical piece of European/Americas colinizations history as well as England vs Spainish struggles. The author does a reasonable (but sometimes overdone) job of weeving the available facts related to this historic event within a somewhat fictionalized storyline involving the main characters. This book is not written in a captivating style but the historic content makes up for the awkward styler of the author... worth getting if you are bilingual looking for something interesting to read in Spanish as well as for those looking for another point of view on the merits of Anglo vs Latin Americas colonization.
