The case starts with a series of threatening notes; it then becomes a kidnapping case; and, finally, a murder case. Bill Crane and his assistant, O'Malley, travel to Penn Essex's mansion near Miami to solve the case but, mostly, to drink. The very rich Essex has been receiving notes from an extortionist who calls himself "The Eye." The notes are always delivered in a seemingly impossible manner. Crane and O'Malley meet very strange house guests at Essex's mansion. Then Essex's sister is kidnapped. It seems to be related to The Eye's threatening notes but is it really? Then another house guest is murdered, leaving Crane in a very delicate, and dangerous, situation. For much of the book, the detective doesn't seem to do much except drink and go to night clubs but he is slowly gathering information with the assistance of some other members of his agency. Crane learns about gambling debts and gang wars that might be related to the case(s). The revelation of the murderer comes about 4/5 of the way through the book. The ending (rescuing the kidnap victim) is a major change in pace with a lot of suspense and action. The style is very flat with lots of simple sentences. Descriptions rely heavily on color and clothing is described in great detail. This is Number 4 in a series of 5. I haven't read any of the others but I will read at least one and possibly all.Tags : The Dead Don't Care [Jonathan Latimer] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers.,Jonathan Latimer,The Dead Don't Care,No Exit Press,0948353082,VIN0948353082,Fiction,Mystery,Crime & mystery

It just doesn't get any better than Jonathan Latimer, a little known writer of superb noir-like thrillers. He not only is a constantly good writer but has a non-stop imagination. I don't know that this is necessarily his best novel, but if you haven't discovered him yet then you are in for a real treat
This novel continues the adventures of William Crane, and his hard-drinking buddies of his detective agency. Unlike the earlier novels, this one takes place in sunny Florida, and Latimer's description of the scenery is quite good.
Wittier than most of these types of novels, almost a screw-ball comedy. Virtually every character is drinking in every scene, and is improved because of it(!). The actual mystery is not too hard to figure out, but there are some smaller mysteries within the larger framework that take some figuring, but are rational when the detective finally figures them out (and explains them to the reader).
I was curious after reading a movie review of this book. It was written way back in the 1930's and reflected the attitudes of that era. That alone made it fun. Plus, it was written just for fun, not to be taken seriously. Reading the book helped me to understand the movie better. I liked it.
