I am a long time fan of Vonnegut's short stories and novels. I even wrote my master's thesis (in 1982 at Bradley University, Peoria, Illinois) on CAT'S CRADLE, SLAUGHTERHOUSE-FIVE, and BREAKFAST of CHAMPIONS. I have continued to read everything Vonnegut has written, as well as his collected letters and many scholarly biographies and essays on his work. Though I am now retired, after teaching for 38 years (six at the high school level and 32 at the college level), I still enjoy any opportunity to hear Vonnegut's "voice."LIKE SHAKING HANDS WITH GOD is the perfect way to "eavesdrop" on the Vonnegut and Stringer, as they discuss why they write, how they came to write and value of being writers. This wonderful slim volume is a must-read for anyone who wishes to become a writer and for any one who loves Vonnegut's work.

It's Vonnegut - Read it.
This book gives a wonderful personal view into the mind of this great author. The caring nature of this man displayed in this interview has given me a greater appreciation of his work. All Vonnegut fans should read.
I'm a fan of Kurt Vonnegut. Some of his thought is too far-out for me, but will always be considered. He may be able to see further than I...my all-time-favourite of his is "Galapagos". Received in good condition.
I love all Kurt Vonnegut books, so I am not going to say anything bad abound the book. The book is overall a great book.I think everyone should read this great book.
Every English major has one writer who is responsible for their journey into the field. I have two Muriel Spark and Kurt Vonnegut. I am not the kind of guy who walks around pretending to be a writer; I am no writer. I do, however, love to read about what makes writers tick, what inspires them to write. This is one of the reasons I picked up this tiny book--I hoped it would give me some insight. I didn't. The conversations, at times, are interesting. But it wasn't worth the cash I shelled out for the 79 pages. If this had of appeared in a magazine, I would have read it and not whined. If this had appeared in a magazine, I wouldn't have wasted over 10 bucks.
The only reason why I didn't give more stars is because I wish there was more. I have a feeling that seeing it live would have been so much better. It isn't so much a book about writing, but a look at their own writing lives. That in itself is way more compelling. Taking into consideration how different their paths were it is amazing how they both came to very similar conclusions about writing. It is too short, but still worthwhile.
_Like Shaking Hands With God_ is not worth the money of you have read the other works by Vonnegut he wrote since 1980 that spells out his personal philosophy on life, the universe and everything. However, I stand by my assertion that if someone were to publish Vonnegut's collected grocery lists, I would buy that book.
This book, comes close. It is short and spare and lacking in depth -- 80 pages of widely spaced larger type font. I am now vaguely interested in the writings of Lee Stringer now, but not enough that I plan on following up on finding more
about his work.
