Gray was a new author to me, but I'd heard amazing things about her Evernight series, so my expectations were high. I was also completely drawn in by the absolutely stunning cover art! What I got was a book of magic and love with a twist of mystery. I tried to love this book. I really wanted to love this book. I just didn't. I loved her writing style and I found myself occasionally re-reading certain passages because the prose was just beautiful. Unfortunately, I didn't like the story very much.
Nadia is a young witch who comes to Captive's Sound with her dad and brother following her parents nasty divorce and dealing with some massive sized abandonment issues due to her mother. Mateo is a local boy who's family has been cursed for generations due to a witch's dark magic on Captive's Sound. And, then there's Verlaine, who is a constant outcast with her peers. The three of them make up an unlikely team to find out what is going on in the strange town, as Nadia especially senses something beneath the Chemistry Lab. (What?! - Yeah, I didn't get it either.)
I think my biggest problem was that I couldn't connect to the characters... at all. I felt like they were flat. The POV kept switching between the three main characters (...and a bird's at one point), so that was a little disconcerting. That usually doesn't bother me, but in this book, it was jarring. As much as there was no connection between the book and I, I feel the same thing happened with the characters. Sometimes the relationships seemed forced.
Elizabeth, the villain, should have been a formidable, scary entity, and unfortunately, I was just irritated with her. If I could have used one of their spells and popped her up out of my Kindle, I'd have taken my fingers and given her a good flick right out of the book.
All that said, occasionally I'd come upon a part of the story that would grab me and I'd have to furiously flip pages until I found out what would happen. But, those were too few and far between in my opinion. The ending was absolutely spectacular. It was such a strong finish that I didn't see coming.
This is the first book of a trilogy, so while this wasn't my favorite book, I wouldn't count it out yet. Stick around for what's to come. As I said, Gray's other works have made a huge impression, and even her writing in this book was beautiful, so we're quite possibly in for a big surprise.

Spellcaster Claudia Gray Books Reviews
This reads very much like a sketch. I kept with it because the plot, at least initially, was interesting. The characters are pretty flat, though. Relationships are presented as fait accompli, rather than built from events and personalities. The fact that the book ends on a cliffhanger was pretty disappointing, as I'm not likely to tough through further installments.
First 80% was enjoyable, but the ending spoils the experience. Apparently it was more important to tease you into buying the next book in the series rather than give a satisfactory ending. This books does not fulfill its promises. None of the secrets teased throughout the book are answered in the end. The (horribly cliched, unsympathetic) antagonist is not even remotely inconvenienced in the end and the book ends with a contrived cliff hanger that feels like you're in the middle of a Dan Brown novel.
The protagonist is likable and the magic and setting are all quite compelling, but the ending was such a sour experience I have no intention of buying any more books in this series.
Brilliant! I thoroughly enjoyed this book! It was a well written page-turner. The author did a wonderful job. I'm excited to read the next one!
A young witch moves to a new town and uncovers a vast network of evil and curses that have ravaged to town for hundreds of years. I almost stopped reading at 20%, but I paid too much to quit! It got a lot more interesting after that. The end was something I surely didn't see coming. The story itself was still a lot of talk and little action, but the twists and reveals kept it interesting. It was a clean read, and appropriate for the 13+ crowd.
Really loved this book. Not my usual type of read, but really glad I did. The only bad part is that it ended. I want more and get the impression that there will be more. Just have to wait and I'm not good at that. So if the next book in this series is any where near as good as this one, it will be worth the wait.
As for the bad reviews I've read about this book, the only explanation I can give is that there are always people out there who need a reason to complain. I'd just like to challenge them to write a book on this level.
I loved Claudia Gray's Evernight series, so when I saw that Spellcaster was available I didn't hesitate to download it to my . The story sounded interesting, and I was really excited to get lost in the book the way I did with those in the Evernight series.
That said, however, I found myself...bored. The first chapter drew me in right away, but my interest gradually waned as the story progressed. The writing itself is no disappointment (hence the three starts), but I struggled in the last third or so of the book just to finish. It wasn't a terrible story, either; I think that the idea had promise. Unfortunately, the book lacked action and even romance (it was there, but seemed too drawn out to me). Overall I thought it was a bit underwhelming.
If you're considering a book or series by Claudia Gray and you haven't yet read it, I'd recommend checking out Evernight over this one.
I am such a bad fan. I LOVED her other series Evernight!! But this one I just couldn't get through it. We know who the bad guy shortly after the book starts so that cut out a lot of the mystery. In the end I was really just board out of my mind. The characters weren't very thrilling to me. The story felt flat. The multi POVs were find in my book. I never wondered who I was reading. So that was done very well! But the characters themselves were just blah.

Lacked mystery and lovable characters.
