World Gone By A Novel Joe Coughlin Series Dennis Lehane 9780060004903 Books
I could not wait for this book to come out. I had finished the previous Joe Coughlin novel last year and was pleasantly surprised to see another one coming out so soon. I cannot say enough about this book. It ends all of the sub plots from the last book without it feeling forced. The novel never stops and you cannot stop turning the pages. I finished it in one day and was disappointed that it was over. It is a great novel by a great author. I did not read the first book in the series but am going to start reading it now. I have read most of Mr Lehane's other series and I have to say that this is the best of them. The characters are rich and the story keeps moving. I have some other comments but these comments would spoil the book for others. I highly recommend that you read this book.Tags : World Gone By: A Novel (Joe Coughlin Series) [Dennis Lehane] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. This is the third (and final) book in the Joe Coughlin series. To get the full impact of this book it is necessary to read the first two ("The Given Day" and "Live By Night") in order to understand the complex relationships and back history among the characters. If you are concerned about the cost of buying the first two, buy either the paperbacks or used hardcovers on . You can find excellent copies for significantly less than the original prices.
The story line for this book is well explained on the product page, so I won't go into it here. If you have read "Mystic River" and "Gone Girl" and/or all of his previous works (like I have) you will notice that in this novel Dennis Lehane crosses several genres seamlessly, a tactic seldom seen and hardly ever done effectively. About half way through this crime novel Mr. Lehane adds a supernatural aspect, nothing outlandish but an interesting byplay. While this subplot continues to "float" throughout the story, it is the move into dark horror that shocked and totally captivated me.
This is a horror confronted by only a relatively few men during their lifetimes, a type of horror that causes unintended consequences and collateral damage in waves of such magnitude that it subjects those involved to pressures that cause their lives to become living hell. The scariest part of this is that it can -- and does -- happen in the real world. When you read it you will understand the full impact of what I'm describing.
Not many authors can pull off such a fete without looking ridiculous. A crime novel which evolves into a supernatural mystery, and then into dark horror without disturbing the basic integrity of the story, is quite an achievement for a writer. Add to this Mr. Lehane's taught writing, smooth and often sarcastic verbal exchanges, and the character development and realism that allows you to see yourself in the novel, and you have an outstanding book that you will probably never forget.
Joe Coughlin is a conflicted gangster in the 1940s. He’s killed a lot of people, broken a lot of laws, and spent time in prison, but, despite all that, he has a moral compass of sorts. He also has a nine-year-old son, Tomas, whom he will protect at any cost. The boy’s mother is dead, and keeping Tomas out of harm’s way is a challenge for a father whose “thing” is mob-like, especially when Joe learns that someone has ordered a hit on him. No one in Joe’s circle of baddies can imagine why anyone would do this, much less who would want him dead. This novel is very violent, but it has a soul in its own way, but I was disappointed in the ending. Also, Joe has taken to seeing a ghost of his childhood self, and I did not understand that at all. Is the ghost supposed to represent his innocence before he got caught up in the underworld? Certainly Joe does not reminisce about his childhood, which was far less happy than his precarious and exciting adulthood. I get that Joe is honorable in his own way and remorseful about some of the things he’s done in the past for the sake of his corrupt empire. He makes some difficult decisions that have devastating ramifications, and his rationalizations make a distorted kind of sense. He has to weigh his loyalties to longtime friends and associates against what is most important to him—Tomas. The plot held my attention, but this novel is just too dark and depressing for me. I like Lehane’s PI duo, Patrick and Angela, much better.
World Gone By is the third book in the Joe Coughlin trilogy. It can stand alone, but I would urge you to read books one and two before you read this one. The series is an historical, generational story which begins in Boston just after the first world war. The focus is on the sons of a celebrated police captain. The stories have been painstakingly researched and are historically accurate. The characters are so finely drawn, you begin to feel like you know them personally and come to truly care about them.
Joe Coughlin is the youngest son of the family. When the story begins, he is about twelve years old. This third book is the culmination of Joe's life and career. It's a humorous, suspenseful, exciting, frightening, sad, and ultimately gut wrenching story of a man we've come know since childhood.
His ill-chosen path in life has brought him at last to Florida, trying to hold onto a World Gone By.
